Interactive Storytelling and Book Marketing
How Twine Can Deepen Reader Engagement and Expand Your Reach
More Than Words on a Page
One of the most difficult things for indie authors is reaching, attracting and keeping an audience. Cultural habits are changing and the publishing industry is undergoing a transformation. Books remain relevant, but there has been an undeniable surge in consuming interactive, visual, and auditory narratives.
But what if you could make your story interactive without coding experience?
With Twine, a free and open-source tool, writers can craft interactive narratives, branching stories, and text-based games. It’s not just a gaming platform, it’s a creative space where modern storytellers captivate audiences with innovative narratives.
What Is Twine?
Twine is an interactive story or game creation tool that is free to use and create. It's accessible to beginners, yet scalable for growth. You can get started with no programming experience but the possibilities scale up in complexity, allowing for deeper customization and functionality using JavaScript and CSS. Twine is a versatile platform where you can create:
A branching side story exploring a character’s untold backstory.
A mystery puzzle game based on your book’s plot.
An episodic adventure where choices impact the ending.
And Much more…
Why Should Authors Explore Twine?
Opportunities to Expand Your Storytelling
Offer side stories, alternate perspectives, and scenarios that let readers actively take part in shaping the narrative.
Engagement with Your Readers
Incorporate interactive features to transform passive readers into active participants, or leverage Twine games for supplementary materials and marketing.
Innovative Marketing
Offer free Twine demos to promote upcoming books or create paid exclusive Twine adventures for dedicated fans.
Accessibility
You can easily share Twine stories as standalone web pages, embed them on websites, or host them on Itch.io, Philome.la, and similar platforms.
New Market Reach
Platforms like Itch.io or Philome.la have dedicated market customers for Twine games. This exposes your storytelling to new audiences who might not otherwise have encountered your work through books alone.
Revenue Stream
You can offer Twine games for free or implement monetization strategies to generate income. Get more people to your site or find paying customers through consumer markets (e.g., Itch.io).
Breaking Free from the Page
The word “author” frequently evokes images of printed books. Nowadays, though, stories are thriving across podcasts, games, animations, and interactive fiction.
Everyone loves a good story, and Twine makes storytelling easy for everyone. It enables authors to experiment beyond the printed page while upholding the core values of the craft.
By embracing the storyteller mindset, you’ll move beyond a single medium and explore diverse storytelling methods.
Getting Started with Twine
Step 1: Download Twine
Visit Twine’s Official Website and download the software. Another option is Twine’s web version, which saves in your browser (but clearing your browser’s memory will delete your work).
Step 2: Learn the Basics
Passages are like pages of your story. Create your first story with simple passages using links to create branching choices. Experiment with different story formats, such as Chapbook, Harlowe or SugarCube.
Step 3: Share Your Story
Use the ‘Publish to file’ to export your Twine game as an HTML file.
Examples and Use Cases:
Enhance World-Building
Create an interactive timeline or map of your fictional world.
Build lore-focused experiences that let readers explore your universe at their own pace.
Supplemental Marketing
Offer an interactive teaser for your book’s first chapter.
Create a “choose-your-own-path” adventure as a lead magnet for your newsletter.
Experiment and Prototype
Test story ideas interactively before committing them to long-form fiction.
Get feedback from readers on multiple endings or plot branches.
Mystery Game Example
My initial Twine experience involved a project for work that gamified critical thinking and investigation training.
Players discovered clues, made deductions, and followed branching pathways toward solving the mystery.
The clues that were discovered were saved in the Investigation Notes for reference in solving the mystery.
Clues and checkpoints along the way earned stars, sleuths and magnifying glasses to be used later in the investigation.
This same concept could be used in a mystery story that combines traditional prose and interactive puzzles.
Update 12/30/24 - I have created a stripped down template version of this investigation game available FREE along with a comprehensive guide for use and additional resources [here]
Current Work in Progress
I’m working on an episodic Twine game based on the Suns of Treysola (from my Whispers in the Wind collection). It is a Sci-Fi themed story I will release starting with Chapter 1, and will continue to expand the game/story through the chapters. The story changes depending on the reader/player’s choices, and they collect resources to use in later chapters. More than just a game, this is an interactive storytelling experience allowing readers to become active participants in the narrative.
Tips for Authors Starting with Twine
Start Simple to understand the tool. Use basic macros and links to create a simple branching story. (reference the story format documentation for help)
Think Small, Dream Big—a single compelling scene can become the foundation of a larger world.
Incorporate images and soundscapes to elevate the experience.
Host your Twine on Itch.io or embed the game on your website.
The Future of Storytelling is Here
Twine isn’t just a tool for storytelling—it opens doors for creative authors to explore beyond traditional books and immerse the audience into their story. Twine’s flexibility and accessibility allow you to create standalone interactive stories, marketing tools for your novel, or simply experiment with new formats.

Hey there R.M. I notice that you are posting this on Substack. I want to post Twine stories on Substack. Can you tell me how? Why are you not publishing interactive Twine stories on Substack? I'd love to chat with you about the possibilities.
